LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) secured his second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Year honor to lead a group of five Kutztown University wrestlers who were named to the all-conference teams Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Dunn Jr. became an All-American for the third time in his illustrious career two weeks ago when he finished as the national runner-up in the heavyweight weight class at the NCAA Division II Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Â
Dunn Jr. won the heavyweight national championship in 2019 and was 20-0 in 2019-20 heading into nationals, before they were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The prolonged effects of the pandemic carried into the 2020-21 season and Dunn Jr. was unable to defend his title with Kutztown and the PSAC canceling competition.
Â
The graduate student from Bethlehem, Pa., finally got his long-awaited opportunity to return to the mat in 2021-22. He posted a 23-1 record this season, including a 12-0 dual record and 7-0 PSAC dual record. He scored 62 team points for the Golden Bears in duals and led Kutztown with eight pins on the year.
Â
Dunn Jr., the 2019-20 PSAC Athlete of the Year (no award in 2020-21 due to the pandemic), is a three-time All-American, Super Region 1 champion and All-PSAC honoree. In three seasons with the Maroon and Gold, Dunn Jr. compiled an overall record of 69-3 (.958) with 22 pins, 15 major decisions and three technical falls. He won 61 consecutive matches between 2018-2022 leading up this year's national championship bout.
Â
Joining Dunn Jr. on the All-PSAC First Team for the second time is senior 133-pounder
Collin Wickramaratna (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). The former Ursinus grappler and two-time All-American came within one win at the national tournament of his third such honor.
Â
Wickramaratna recorded a 23-6 overall record and went 10-1 in duals (5-1 PSAC). He spent the entirety of the season in the NWCA national rankings en route to his second straight Super Region 1 title. The Marlton, N.J., native avenged a regular season loss to Mercyhurst's Eric Bartos by defeating him for the regional crown, 8-5. In just two seasons with KU, Wickramaratna owns a 48-10 record.
Â
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) wasn't even on the Golden Bears' radar when preseason commenced back in the fall, but in just a few short months he's now an All-PSAC First Team selection.
Â
The former Penn State club wrestler was attracted to the camaraderie of the program while competing against Kutztown during open tournaments in the season's first few months. Weinberg enrolled at KU for the spring semester and immediately made an impact by solidifying the Bears' lineup at 184 pounds, where he went 9-3 overall with a Super Region 1 championship and qualified for the NCAA DII Championships.
Â
Weinberg totaled five wins in six dual matches, pinning a pair of opponents and recording a major decision. The redshirt freshman defeated Millersville's Anthony Giampietro, 7-2, for the regional title and appeared 10th in his weight class in the NWCA's final individual national rankings.
Â
Fellow national qualifier and 197-pound Super Region 1 champion
Brian Kennerly (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) claimed a spot on the All-PSAC Second Team following an impressive first season with the Golden Bears.
Â
Kennerly, from Drexel Hill, Pa., stepped back onto the mat competitively for the first time since the 2017-18 season when he was with Division I Virginia. He ended up leading Kutztown in victories this season with 25 (25-5) and worked his way into the NWCA national rankings at No. 4 by season's end.
Â
A graduate student, Kennerly competed in all 12 duals for the Maroon and Gold, going 11-1 (6-1 PSAC), with his only loss to All-American Joel Leise of Gannon. Kennerly won his opening match at the NCAA DII Championships, before ultimately falling one win shy of All-America honors.
Â
Senior 125-pounder
Matt Wilde (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) received his first all-conference nod with a spot on the Third Team. The Boyertown, Pa., native enjoyed his best season in 2021-22, winning a career-high 22 matches (22-5), spending time in the national rankings and competing in his first regional tournament.
Â
Wilde, who transferred to KU from Ursinus after the 2017-18 season, went 10-2 in dual matches, including 6-1 against conference opponents. He placed fifth at regionals and concluded his KU career with a 38-11 record.
Â
Kutztown's five all-conference selections are a single-season program record. This is the second year in which the PSAC's wrestling coaches have voted for major award winners and all-conference teams. Prior to the 2019-20 season, all-conference honors went to the top three finishers in each weight class at the PSAC Championships.
