HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Kutztown University enjoyed a successful Sunday at the Bob Quade Cyclone Open hosted by Centenary College, with
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) winning the 165-pound title and nationally-ranked
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) continuing his unbeaten run to open the season with a third 184-pound tournament title.
Â
The pair of bracket winners were among eight placewinners overall for the Maroon and Gold.
Â
Weinberg remained red hot, extending his unbeaten streak to 12 matches. Following bracket victories in the ESU Open, Nov. 6, and the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Open, Nov. 19, Weinberg won his dual debut at Seton Hill Friday. He went right back to work, Sunday, with a technical fall and decision to reach the finals. Weinberg, who recently moved up to eighth in the NWCA's individual rankings, pinned Long Island's Gavin Claro just 86 seconds into the championship bout for his third title in as many tournaments this season.
Â
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) emerged from an all-KU final at 157 to claim his second tournament crown of the campaign. The redshirt freshman from Hamburg, Pa., started off in dominant fashion by pinning his first round and quarterfinal opponents, before earning a 6-3 decision over Navy Prep's Nick Vafiadis in the semifinals and a 6-2 decision against teammate
Sean Smith (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) in the final. Gimbor also triumphed at 157 back at the ESU Open.
Â
Smith was the next highest finishing Golden Bear grappler and its only runner-up on the day. His path to the final included back-to-back technical fall wins over Williamson College's Michael Kling, 16-0 (2:18), in the quarters and Nik Pagano of Sussex County CC, 16-0 (2:13), in the semis.
Â
Senior
Collin Wickramaratna (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), ranked 10th in the nation at 141, placed fourth, as did 197 lb. redshirt junior
Tyler Fisher (Lenhartsville, Pa./Kutztown).
Â
Wickramaratna collected a 3:09 pin over Delaware Valley's Artem Reichert in the quarterfinals and a 20-5 technical fall that went the distance in a consolation semifinal victory over Rutgers' Andrew Aromando. In the third-place bout, Wickramaratna fell to Centenary's Xavier Pena, 6-4.
Â
Fisher rebounded from a 5-2 defeat in his quarterfinal match to go on a point-scoring barrage through the consolation bracket. In three wrestle back victories –all by technical fall— Fisher outscored his opponents by a combined 50-1. During that impressive run, he registered 10 four-point nearfalls, a two-point nearfall and four takedowns.
Â
A hard-fought 5-4 loss to Matt Richardson in the consolation final sent Fisher to fourth in the bracket.
Â
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) went 4-2 on the day after, recovering from a setback in his opening match to claim fifth-place at 165 lbs.
Julien Maldonado (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) was sixth at 125 and
Trent Thompson (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) sixth at 133.
Â
Kutztown will return to action in just over a month when it hosts the KU Duals Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023 at O'Pake Fieldhouse.
