Volleyball’s PSAC East win streak stopped in loss to Millersville

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team was sporting a season-high two-match win streak in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition. But, after taking Millersville to the brink and beyond, KU fell in straight sets Friday night at Keystone Arena by scores of 28-30, 16-25, 24-26.

The Golden Bears (9-8 overall, 3-3 PSAC East), who entered the night in a tie with Shepherd for second place in the division, are now tied with three other teams (Shippensburg, West Chester and Millersville) for third place.

Set one was a marathon as both teams had rallies and exuded all that they had as 58 points total were scored. Kutztown took a 10-10 tie into a 20-13 advantage, but Millersville scored nine of the next 11 points to rally to a 22-22 tie. The teams then went back-and-forth until the Black and Gold finally put away the Maroon and Gold on a service ace by Emma Ludwig.

After set one, it could be assumed that both teams would be exhausted and one may carry more positive momentum than the other. That was the case as Millersville went on a 7-0 run after leading just 12-10 and took set two.

Down 2-0, the Golden Bears never gave in. After a back-and-forth beginning, KU found itself behind 23-21, but tied the score at 23-all. It was down to match point but Adrianna Derstine (Barto, Pa./Boyertown), who led the team with 17 kills, had her final one of the match that sent the score to another deadlock at 24-24. MU, then, recorded back-to-back kills to finish off the match.

Derstine also had 11 digs for KU. Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) recorded 12 kills, 10 digs and two aces. Jasmine Mooney (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) tallied nine kills and six digs, while Julia Post (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) finished with seven kills. Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) contributed 31 assists, 14 digs and two kills. Grace Ingram (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) had three kills and four blocks and Gianna Agosti (Nesquehoning, Pa./Marian Catholic) finished with 19 digs.

Kutztown hosts West Chester tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 8, for Pink Day at 1 p.m.
