EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Kutztown took the opening set from Pitt-Johnstown Friday afternoon at the ESU Invitational, but the Mountain Cats claimed the next three to defeat the Golden Bears 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-16).
Junior transfer
Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) collected four of her eight kills and senior
Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) added three of her team-high 11 in Kutztown's (1-4) first set win.
Two kills from Doss, one from Patterson and another from
Grace Ingram (Allentown, Pa./William Allen), coupled with an ace by
Gianna Agosti (Nesquehoning, Pa./Marian Catholic) helped the Maroon and Gold to an 8-2 run that turned an 8-6 deficit into a 14-10 lead. KU maintained its advantage throughout the remainder of the set, stretching it to five, 24-19, on another Agosti ace. The final margin of victory would be five after
Julia Post (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) ended it with a kill two points later.
The Golden Bears were poised to overcome an early seven-point hole in the second when kills from Doss tied the score at both 20- and 21-all. Lualis Alvarado sandwiched kills around a pair of KU miscues, though, to help UPJ (2-1) capture the set and even the score.
From there, the Mountain Cats used a relentless offensive attack to keep the Bears at bay. UPJ hit .333 (17 kills, six errors, 33 attempts) in winning the third by 12 points and posted a .268 hitting percentage (14-3-41) in the fourth. Pitt-Johnstown's third and fourth set hitting percentages were the two highest for either side in the match.
Patterson finished as the only Golden Bear with double-digit kills.
Emma Filipovits (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and
Lauren Jackson (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) each had five.
Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) notched a double-double by setting up 28 kills and digging 10 UPJ attacks. Morrow was also active at the net with two block solos and a matching number of block assists. Libero
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) recorded a team-high 27 digs.
Grace Miller led the Mountain Cats with 15 kills and 20 digs. Alvarado finished with 14 kills and 18 digs, Adiamar Beaz had match-highs of 36 assists and 24 digs and Erin Carmody had 17 digs.
Kutztown's first match of the tournament, scheduled for noon against Caldwell, was declared no contest after travel issues forced a late arrival for the Golden Bears.
KU will face host East Stroudsburg at 11 a.m. Saturday and finish the weekend against Saint Anselm at 3 p.m.
