SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team led 11-9 with just under 13 minutes left to play, but Shippensburg University scored the game's last three goals, on route to winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game 12-11 Saturday afternoon at the Robb Sports Complex.
The Golden Bears (1-11 overall, 1-10 PSAC) led for a majority of the game and only trailed once, when Shippensburg's Hannah Seifried found the back of the net with just 1:10 remaining, to give the Raiders the victory. Seifried also tied the game at 11-11 with a goal at the 7:25 mark. The teams were tied four different times, but Kutztown was either out in front or deadlocked for all but the final tally.
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee),
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North),
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) and
Hannah Brewster (Denton, Md./North Caroline) all tallied two goals for KU.
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland),
Marissa Giancola (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) and
Shannon Lake (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) had one goal each to round out the scoring for the Maroon and Gold. Hurd led the team with two assists, while Cafferata, Brewster and
Sydnie Bisesi (Denton, Md./North Caroline) all finished with one a piece.
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) made 14 saves.
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) had a team-leading six ground balls.
Kutztown scored the opener off the stick of Brewster a mere 0:26 into the game, and held early leads of 1-0 and 2-1. After Meakim's goal at the 21:26 mark of the first half, KU led 3-2 and followed it up with three out of the next four goals to find itself up 6-3. The Raiders (5-7, 5-6), however, netted three straight to end the half tied 6-6.
Meakim, Fitzpatrick and Hurd went back-to-back-to-back to begin the second half and KU once again held a three-goal advantage with 25:42 left to play. But Shippensburg went on a 6-2 scoring run to finish off the game.
Kutztown hosts its season-finale on Wednesday, April 28, at 4 p.m., against nationally-ranked West Chester University.
