KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown University's 2021 women's lacrosse season came to a close with a 25-5 defeat against unbeaten and fourth-ranked West Chester Wednesday afternoon at Keystone Field.
Despite two goals from
Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) and one each by
Carson Dillard (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg),
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and
Marissa Giancola (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), the Golden Bears could not match the firepower of the two-time defending PSAC champion and 2019 NCAA Division II national runner-up Golden Rams.
West Chester netted the game's first 11 goals to induce a running clock and led by as many as 21 in the second half on its way to finishing the regular season a perfect 11-0, with all of its victories coming against PSAC East opponents.
Giancola, a sophomore from Cape May, N.J., took a pass from classmate
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and beat WCU goalie Julianne Clemens to get the Maroon and Gold (1-12, 1-11 PSAC East) on the board with 9:20 left in the first half.
The Golden Rams responded with the next four goals before Hurd found Dillard in close for Dillard's first career goal with less than two seconds remaining in the opening period.
Lane (23:53) and Fitzpatrick (9:11) tallied unassisted second-half goals, and Lane closed the scoring with 3:58 to play off a
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) feed.
Tatum Altman was at the center of the action for nearly half of the Rams' goals, compiling a game-high 12 points on five goals (six shots) and seven assists. WCU's potent attack also received four goals from Hannah Stanislawczyk, three from Trisha Baud and five points from Kelly Baumann (2 goals, 3 assists). In total, nine Golden Rams registered multi-goal games.
West Chester outshot KU 30-13, doubled up the Bears in ground balls 18-9 and gained a 16-15 edge in draw controls. The visitors also converted all five of their free-position attempts.
Fitzpatrick and WCU's Stanislawczyk shared the game-high with five draw controls apiece.
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) added three draws and two ground balls, and
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) had three draws for the hosts.
KU goalies were under constant pressure.
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) started and made five saves in the opening half before giving way to Gallagher for the final 30 minutes.
West Chester's 25 goals were the most allowed by a Kutztown team since Lock Haven put up 25 back on April 10, 2010.
Though the team celebrated Senior Day earlier in the season, Wednesday's regular season finale most likely brought an end to the collegiate careers of Cafferata,
Kaily Crystle (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Fitzpatrick, Lane,
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and
Taylor Small (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) (injured).
