KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) won singles matches for the Kutztown University women's tennis team, but the Golden Bears fell to visiting Millersville 5-2 in its season-opener Thursday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.
The Marauders (1-1, 1-0 PSAC East) took control early with decisive victories at all three doubles flights. Maria Ojeda won fourth singles and Julie Wallace second singles in straight sets to put Millersville within a point of clinching.
Tomczyk, a senior, defeated Joanna Newton 6-4, 6-1 at sixth singles to get the Golden Bears (0-1, 0-1 PSAC East) on the board.
Makarski fought back from a set down to beat Jasmine Morris at first singles 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 to give the hosts their remaining point.
Thursday's win was Millersville's seventh in a row against KU dating back to 2015. Prior to that, the Bears had won five straight in the series.
Kutztown faces another PSAC East opponent in West Chester this coming Saturday at 1 p.m. on the Keystone Courts.
