KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Defending PSAC East champion West Chester sent the Kutztown women's tennis team to its second defeat on the young season, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) hung with the Golden Rams' Tori Alexander and Elaina Lee at No. 1 doubles, but came out on the wrong side of a 6-4 score. Otherwise, the hosts struggled to gain traction against a WCU squad that has routinely been among the Eastern Division's best over the last seven seasons.
The Rams (1-1, 1-0 PSAC East) won second and third doubles, 6-1 and 6-0, before sweeping six singles matches in straight sets.
Makarski (No. 1 singles), Maher (No. 3) and
Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) (No. 4) each won a combined four games in their matches, while No. 2
Amanda Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) won three games in her opening set loss to Davica Massaro.
Kutztown, which dropped to 0-2 overall and sports a matching record in league play, plays its third straight home match in a stretch of five to open the 2021 season on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Shippensburg.
