Golden Bear women's tennis wraps up fall season with loss to Seton Hill

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's tennis team concluded the fall portion of its schedule with a 5-2 defeat to Seton Hill Saturday at Latrobe High School.

The Golden Bears were shorthanded with only five players available, forcing them to default matches at third doubles and sixth singles.

In doubles, the Griffins jumped out to an early lead as Cameron Beer and Kendall McCluskey captured the doubles point as the top pair following the default win at No. 3. At No. 2, it was Kasey Storkel and Julianna Begley coming out on top, 7-5 for the hosts over the Bears' Devyn Campbell (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) and Brianna Wendling (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown).

Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) at No. 1 singles and Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) at No. 2 helped KU capture its two points in the match. It was both players' first win of the fall, as they each pulled through in straight sets. Makarski beat Beer 6-2, 6-3 and Maher took care of McCluskey 6-2, 6-4.

That would not be enough however, as KU (0-3) dropped matches at flights three, four and five, losing all three in straight sets. Campbell won a pair of games at No. 3, Wendling took three games at No. 4 and Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) grabbed a lone game at No. 5.

Saturday's match was Kutztown's tighest of the fall. Judy Lawes once again served as the acting head coach, as the team gets ready to welcome new head coach Wyatt Pauley in the coming weeks.

Pauley will lead Kutztown's preparation for their spring season, which starts up in March.
