BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Kutztown twice battled back in singles to even its non-conference match with Moravian, but the Greyhounds won the deciding point in a super tiebreaker at fifth singles to hold off the Golden Bear women's tennis team, 5-4, in its spring opener Saturday.
Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) won second doubles, 8-5, over Moravian's Rose Lombardo and Emily Masters to briefly tie the match at one, but the Greyhounds took a 2-1 lead into singles and extended their advantage to 3-1 with a straight set victory from Maddie Figiel at No. 3.
Kutztown (0-4) rallied to even things once again as
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) won her top flight match against Julianne Cassady 6-2, 6-3 and
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) downed Morgan Colver 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2. to make it 3-3.
After the Hounds took a 4-3 lead, Klo prevailed in a super tiebreaker at No. 6 over Masters 6-4, 5-7, 10-6. Lombardo came back to defeat Lazarchak in the same fashion at No. 5 1-6, 7-6 (4), 10-1 to deliver the victory for Moravian (4-1).
Saturday's match was played indoors at Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse with temperatures in the 30s. With Moravian playing host, the match was played under Division III scoring rules, with each doubles match counting for a point.
The Golden Bears, who dropped matches to Jefferson, IUP and Seton Hill during the fall, will get another shot at their first win of the season next Saturday at Scranton.
