Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | by C.J. Hemerly, Assistant Sports Information Director

Women’s lacrosse holds on late to defeat Jefferson for second straight victory

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Freshman Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) did a little bit of everything for the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team Friday night. Her last stat may have been the one she cared about most. Hurd collected a draw control victory with 0:35 to go and allowed KU to run out the clock, holding off Jefferson University for a 14-13 victory in a non-conference game at Keystone Field.

The Golden Bears (2-1 overall) have now won two straight games and are undefeated (2-0) on their new home turf. They have also scored 36 goals in front of the home fans and have 49 on the season, second-best in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), five behind Bloomsburg, which played one extra game.

Hurd had a breakout game in just her third in a Maroon and Gold uniform. She finished with season-highs in goals (4) and points (6), while tying a season-best with two assists. Hurd also contributed three draw controls, the first three she's had this season, with the latter sending KU to another win.

Junior Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) also stood out offensively for Kutztown, netting a hat trick. Captains Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) each tallied multi-goal games for KU, finishing with two apiece.

Hurd opened up the scoring with the game's first goal 2:13 in. There were three ties and two lead changes in the first half with Kutztown holding as much as a three-goal advantage twice, at 6-3 and 8-5, before the Rams (0-2) recorded two tallies in a span of 3:04 to trail by just one (8-7) at halftime.

Junior Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) found the back of the net 4:29 into the second half to push the Golden Bears' lead back two goals (9-7). But Jefferson would rack up the next three to take its first lead since the 20:24 mark of the opening half.

With the score tied 11-11 and 14:46 left on the clock, Hurd scored two-in-a-row to give her team the lead back for good. KU found itself ahead 14-12 with under a minute remaining, but a turnover on their offensive end was quickly taken and run down field the other way for a Rams goal and 14-13 score with 0:35 to go. Needing to win the ensuing draw, Hurd raced onto the ball as it hit the turf and quickly ran down the sideline and found Watkins, who was able to run out the clock.

Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) and Hannah Brewster (Denton, Md./North Caroline) each finished with a goal to round out the KU scoring. Vaughan Ware also added two assists and currently leads the PSAC with eight on the season. Watkins and Lane also had two assists each, and freshman Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) chipped in an assist.

Kutztown will travel to the state of Florida for its next two games. KU will take on Florida Tech on Saturday, March 7, followed by a game at Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, March 10.
