MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Kutztown used five straight goals to pull even with Florida Tech early in the second half of Saturday afternoon's non-conference affair, but the host Panthers responded with four in a row and held off the Golden Bears, 17-13, in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
Five different players had multi-goal games for the Maroon and Gold, which saw its modest two-game winning streak come to a close.
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) scored 56 seconds apart within the opening three minutes to stake KU (2-2) to a 2-0 lead.
Florida Tech (6-1) tallied the next five goals, setting the stage for a game of runs. Back-to-back Aleah Fjelstad markers, each assisted by Mollie Kaplan, made it 5-2 Panthers with 22:30 left in the first half. Kutztown needed less than a minute to knot the game at five following a free position goal from
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) along with a goal apiece from
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and Watkins.
Kailee O'Brien scored all four of her first-half goals during a 6-minute, 44-second stretch, helping push the Panthers' lead to 11-6, but freshman
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and junior
Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township) found the back of the net in the final 1:48 to pull KU back within three at halftime.
Conteh, Cafferata and
Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) scored unanswered goals to start the second half, allowing Kutztown to tie the game at 11 with 24:41 remaining. Florida Tech would seize momentum again, though, scoring the next four goals to pull in front 15-11 by the midway point of the half.
McCormick and
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) capped the scoring for the Golden Bears, who could get no closer than three the rest of the way.
Watkins produced another strong all-around game with three points (two goals, assist), eight draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. The eight draw controls are tied for the sixth most in a game in team history and match the eight by Fitzpatrick against Caldwell for the most by a Golden Bear this season.
Cafferata and Vaughan Ware also supplied two goals and an assist each for three-point afternoons. Conteh and McCormick had two goals apiece, while Fitzpatrick and Lane each totaled a goal and an assist.
Florida Tech outshot the Bears 31-26 and committed eight fewer turnovers (25-17). Kutztown, meanwhile, won the draw control battle 18-14. Both teams converted five free position attempts and picked up 20 ground balls.
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) made nine saves in goal.
Much of the Panthers' offensive damage came from three players. O'Brien was perfect in netting a game-high five goals on five shots, while Fjelstad and Alexis Townsend enjoyed four-goal games.
Chloe Zador held off the Bears by making six second-half saves to earn the win. Starting goalie Madison Fields was credited with four stops while playing the first half.
Kutztown will face Embry-Riddle on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Florida, to wrap up its quick Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State.
