LANCASTER, Pa. -- Kutztown University claimed the top five finishing positions, highlighted by sophomore Evan Adanatzian's (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) victory, to defeat Franklin & Marshall, 15-47, in its 2019 season-opening meet Thursday evening.

The Golden Bears easily dispatched of the host Diplomats in the 5,000-meter race with the lowest possible score in a dual meet. Kutztown's top five were separated by just 16 seconds.

Adanatzian, who only ran in the season opener a season ago, beat teammate Andrew Sulon (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) to the stripe by one second, to win the race in 16:20. Freshman Ryan Smith (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) completed a successful collegiate debut with a third-place run in 16:30, followed by fellow rookie Matt Salazar (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) in fourth (16:31) and AJ Kilpatrick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) in fifth (16:36).

Franklin & Marshall's top finisher was David Schwartz in sixth, just ahead of KU's Derek Barney (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) (16:40). The Diplomats and Golden Bears would alternate the next several finishing spots with Giordanovenchy Cerisier (North Wales, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) ninth (17:07) and Nate Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) 11th (17:17) for the Maroon and Gold.

Freshman Nate Shutter finished 14th in his first college race (17:37). Ryan Riley (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (17:41) and Teagan Fortna (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) (18:08) were 15th and 19th for the Golden Bears, respectively.

Kutztown will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 14, when it hosts the Division II/III Challenge on North Campus.
