SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior defender
Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) recorded two goals and added an assist, and senior
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the fifth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team to a 4-0 road win at Slippery Rock University Friday evening.
It was the opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game for the Golden Bears (6-2 overall, 1-0 PSAC), who won for the sixth time in the last seven games, including two in-a-row away from home.
Outside of the double from Roselli and Fuhrman's tally, freshman
Abby Thorius (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) scored her first career goal in the fourth quarter to cap the KU scoring and give the offense its most goals since Sept. 8, when KU tallied eight goals. Kutztown is second in the PSAC in goals per game (3.5).
Fuhrman (5) and Roselli (4) rank one-two in the conference in assists.
It was the second time in exactly two weeks that Kutztown defeated Slippery Rock (2-5, 0-1). The last meeting went in favor of KU 3-0 on Sept. 13.
The KU defense also earned its fourth shutout of the year. The unit included
Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville),
Hannah Shirk (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg), Roselli,
Juliana Borisow (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and
Julia Amoroso (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional).
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) made one save and picked up the victory, giving way the last 15:00 of action to
Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley).
The Maroon and Gold outshot the Rock 17-2, 15-1 on goal, and also held a 17-2 advantage in penalty corners. At least six different Golden Bears recorded shots on goal, including
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg),
Rose Moore (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville),
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin),
Emily Latoski (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), Fuhrman and Roselli.
Fuhrman got Kutztown on the board early on, just 5:36 in she beat the Slippery Rock goalie after a pass from Roselli, who started the corner. Roselli then took matters into her own hands with two straight goals, one on a pass from Fuhrman in the second quarter, and another with an assist by
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) in the fourth. Thorius netted her first goal off of a rebound 0:49 after Roselli's fourth quarter goal.
Kutztown remains on the road for its next game, next Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Bloomsburg at 4 p.m. in PSAC action.
