PHILADELPHIA -- Kutztown men's tennis put in a good showing at the top of its lineup on Monday, but it wasn't enough to fend off regionally-ranked Chestnut Hill in a season-opening 7-0 defeat.
Chestnut Hill, which was ranked fourth in the ITA East Region to end 2018-19, cruised at second and third doubles to earn the match's first point, but
Renato Santos (Seixal, Portugal/Fernão Mendes Pinto) and
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) almost knocked off the regionally-ranked duo of Tom Pitchley and Erik Jorsal at No. 1.
Santos and Carl were tied through 12 games, but Pitchley and Jorsal pulled away to a 7-1 win in the tiebreaker to hold on for the match, 7-6, and ensure a doubles sweep for the Griffins (1-0).
Carl tested Pitchley at first singles, too, taking the first set to a tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (3). Pitchley took the second, 6-4, for the win.
Santos forced Kiki Dagneaux to extra games at second singles in a 6-2, 7-5 defeat.
Kutztown will host Albright in a scrimmage on Friday at 3 p.m., before turning its attention to the PSAC Individual Championships at Bloomsburg, Oct. 5-7.
