KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Jake Augustus (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) was 2-for-3 with a triple in game one and teammate
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) collected a pair of hits in the nightcap, but East Stroudsburg swept a PSAC East doubleheader at North Campus Field 6-2 and 11-0 on Thursday.
GAME 1
East Stroudsburg 6, Kutztown 2
Both teams took advantage of fielding miscues to trade a pair of runs over the first two innings, but East Stroudsburg pulled away to victory with four unanswered runs.
The Warriors (11-6 PSAC East, 25-12) scored two unearned runs in the first before
Jake Augustus (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) led off the bottom of the second with a triple to the wall in right center for KU.
Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) scored the redshirt sophomore on a grounder to second, but the ball was booted into right field and
Jacoby Pate (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) also dashed home with the tying run.
Kutztown starter
Doug Conrad (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West) worked 1-2-3 innings in the second and third. ESU broke the deadlock with back-to-back hits in the fourth as Zarley Cina doubled and CJ Lopez singled in the go-ahead run.
A two-run double from Anthony Torreullas in the sixth provided ESU with some breathing room. The hosts put a runner in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh, but were unable to score.
The Golden Bears (3-14, 4-23) had a prime opportunity to score early, collecting four of their eight hits in the first inning. The game works in mysterious ways, though.
Tanner Miller (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) hit a dart up the middle following Villa's lead-off single, but with the hit-and-run on, ESU second baseman Torreullas was right there to gobble it up for a 6-3 double play.
KU still loaded the bases on consecutive two-out singles from
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua),
Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.), but came up empty after a fly out to left ended the inning.
Conrad was charged with six runs, just two of which were earned, on seven hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out five and walked three.
Michael Hunter (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) came out of the pen to record four outs without allowing a walk or hit.
Warrior pitcher Connor Johnson scattered seven hits over five innings and fanned two to pick up the win, while teammate Chase Nowak tossed two scoreless innings. Torreullas was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Lopez went 2-for-3 and Cina scored twice for ESU.
GAME 2
East Stroudsburg 11, Kutztown 0
Brock Kauffman finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three runs, and East Stroudsburg opened a 7-0 lead after three to complete Thursday's two-game sweep.
Doubles from Kauffman and Christian Rishel lifted the Warriors to a lead in the top of the first. Kauffman struck again in the second with a two-run single to right --part of a 4-for-5 performance at the dish.
The Warriors (12-6 PSAC East, 26-12) increased their lead to 7-0 on a bases-clearing double from Anthony Torreullas in the third.
KU was limited to two hits --both
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) singles-- by ESU starter Cam Voss, who struck out eight over five scoreless innings. A pair of Warrior relievers combined for two more shutout frames.
Kauffman continued to inflict damage with a lead-off home run in the sixth. A pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh provided ESU its final margin of victory. The visitors collected 13 hits, including multi-hit games by Zarley Cina (3-for-4), Kauffman (4-for-5) and Rishel (2-for-4).
Nick McAuliffe (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) struck out three across three innings for KU but was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits and five walks.
