East Stroudsburg overpowers Golden Bears

STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The Kutztown University baseball team was limited to seven hits across two games Saturday, as East Stroudsburg completed a four-game PSAC East weekend sweep with 9-0 and 11-1 victories.

GAME 1
East Stroudsburg 9, Kutztown 0

East Stroudsburg broke game one open with a five-run third inning and the Golden Bears had just two hits through six innings.

Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) singled in the seventh, but Logan Zavada got Jake Augustus (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) to fly out to preserve the Warriors' (13-6 PSAC East, 27-12) shutout.

ESU starting pitcher Joe Baran held the upper hand on Kutztown's lineup with eight strikeouts and two hits allowed through five innings.

Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) led off with a single in the first, stole second and advanced to third before Baran got Lafferty swinging to end the top of the first. KU got another runner into scoring position in the fourth after Tanner Miller's (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) lead-off walk and a balk, but again Baran manufactured a strikeout to keep the Bears (3-16, 4-25) off the board.

Blum was 2-for-3 for Kutztown, but the visitors did not record an extra base hit for the ninth time in 29 games.

Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in three innings. Michael Hunter (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) surrendered a pair of runs in three innings of relief, as KU pitching finished with six walks against just two strikeouts.

Zarley Cina went 2-for-2 with a 3-run homer and two walks for ESU. Sirwalter Melendez added three hits, including a double, and two RBIs, and Mike Sulcoski also drove in two.

GAME 2
East Stroudsburg 11, Kutztown 1

Taking a page out of their game one book, the Warriors again exploded for five runs in the third to snap what was a scoreless game at that point. ESU scored multiple runs in the three straight innings to complete the series sweep.

Zarley Cina provided three more RBIs, Mike Sulcoski homered and ESU hit three doubles as part of an 11-hit barrage.

Kutztown took advantage of a Jeff Zebrowski (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) single and Mike Villa (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) double in the sixth to score its first run in 24 innings on Tanner Miller's (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) sacrifice fly. The Golden Bears had been held scoreless dating back to the second inning of game one of the series on Thursday.

Other than the two sixth-inning hits, KU's only other knock came in the second on a Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) lead-off single.

East Stroudsburg pitching was in control again. Starter Nate Fiala whiffed six across six innings, giving up just one run on three hits. Chase Nowak got all three of his outs via strikeout and the duo didn't allow a walk.

ON DECK
Kutztown is idle until Friday when West Chester visits North Campus Field for a 1 p.m. PSAC East twin bill.
