BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team scored the game's final three goals, but unfortunately ran out of time to complete the comeback as it fell just short of picking up its second road win in three games, losing to Brockport 14-12 Tuesday afternoon in Brockport, N.Y.
Â
The Golden Bears (1-2 overall), who saw their home season-opener back on March 2 get postponed due to weather, has had to play three straight games on the road, but will finally open their season at Andre Reed Stadium this Saturday, March 16, hosting Indiana (PA) at 2 p.m.
Â
Senior midfielder
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) led KU with a game-high four goals and also had an assist.
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn),
Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) and
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) each recorded two goals, with Bowman and McCormick adding an assist and two groundballs. Smith led KU with five draw controls.
Â
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) rounded out the Maroon and Gold scoring with a goal apiece.
Â
Kutztown opened with the game's first two goals by McCormick and Schmidt inside the first 1:55 of the game. The Golden Eagles would score the next three. After a 16:18 scoreless streak, Schmidt and Watkins found the back of the net and gave Kutztown the lead back.
Â
But Brockport had the game-changing run to end the half, as it scored five unanswered in the final 5:36 of the first half to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. The Golden Eagles also netted the first goal of the second half just 1:09 in to take the biggest lead of the game at five goals (9-4).
Â
The Golden Bears then made their run, however, with four of the game's next five goals, led by two from Bowman and one each from McCormick and Schmidt as they found themselves down just 10-8 with still 16:58 remaining.
Â
Brockport answered with three straight and four-of-five though which proved to be too big of a hole for KU to climb out of, as it trailed 14-9 with a little over nine minutes left. After a five-minute hiatus, Kutztown scored its first of three goals to end the game, but ran out of time.
Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson) made 14 saves for KU.
Â
Kutztown will host IUP Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at Andre Reed Stadium in its home-opener and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener.
