Women's lacrosse drops PSAC opener to IUP, 17-10

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Four different players had two goals each, but the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team found an early six-goal deficit too much to overcome in Saturday's 17-10 loss to Indiana (Pa.) at Andre Reed Stadium.

The Crimson Hawks, led by Ally Burrows' eight points, scored seven goals in the first 9:37 to take control early.

Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) set up Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) for the Golden Bears' (0-1 PSAC, 1-3) first home goal of the year at 24:46 of the first half to make it a 3-1 game, but IUP responded with six of the next seven goals.

There were stretches of play where KU carried the play against the No. 6 team in the PSAC's Preseason Poll. With 10:32 remaining in the opening half, Allie McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) netted an unassisted goal for her fifth of the season. Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and Erin Vaughan Ware (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) converted free position attempts at 6:36 and 5:18 to pull the Golden Bears back within four, 9-5.

Kathryn Zeiler's goal in the final minute of the first half with Kutztown down a player pushed IUP's lead to 10-5. The Crimson Hawks (1-0, 3-2) got four straight goals to start the second half, including two by Katie Martyn, to increase their lead to 14-5.

Kutztown matched IUP shot-for-shot in the second half and made a late run with five goals in a span of 10:22 to cut the Crimson Hawks' lead to 15-10 with 6:57 remaining.

McCormick tallied her second of the day with an assist from Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) to start the 5-1 KU run. Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) registered her 10th goal of the year, while Bowman, Fitzpatrick and Watkins also scored during the spurt.

IUP goalie Carly Mansur kept the Bears from getting any closer. She stopped a Bowman free position shot and denied Cafferata in tight with just over five minutes to play to keep her team's lead at five. Mansur also turned away a free position from Vaughan Ware with 2:00 left and IUP scored the game's final two goals.

Burrow's was involved in the action all day for IUP with four goals, four assists and three ground balls. Adriana Greco also had four goals on a game-high 10 shots and Bri Chavis came off the bench to provide three goals and two assists.

The Golden Bears produced half of their goals from the 8-meter arc, finishing 5-of-11 on free position attempts.

Bowman collected a team-leading three points on two goals and an assist. The senior from Lansdale moved into a tie for sixth with Jane Geyer on Kutztown's all-time scoring list with 127 career points. Bowman is three goals shy of 100, which would tie Jillian Spencer for sixth in program history.

Fitzpatrick, McCormick and Watkins also had two goals apiece for the Maroon and Gold.

Defensively, the Golden Bears caused nine of IUP's 18 turnovers with Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) and Watkins providing two each. Fitzpatrick had a team-high three ground balls an matched Smith for the team-lead with three draw controls.

IUP held a 32-28 edge in shots and 18-10 advantage in draws, though the Bears picked up 17 ground balls to the Crimson Hawks' 14.

Goalie Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson) made nine saves for KU over the entire 60 minutes. Lauren Piecknick started for IUP and made three saves in the first half to earn the win. Mansur was tested much more often in the second half and finished with eight saves.

Kutztown plays its second of 10 straight PSAC games this coming Tuesday at West Chester. Game time is 4 p.m.
