WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- West Chester outscored Kutztown University 39-21 in the second half to snap the Golden Bears' five-game win streak, 64-53, Saturday afternoon at Hollinger Field House.
The loss dropped KU to second-place in the PSAC East, a game back of Bloomsburg, with four regular season conference games remaining.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had 10 points and
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) added six in the first half when Kutztown (13-10, 11-5 PSAC) shot better than 41% to take a seven-point lead (32-25) at halftime.
Thames, who was a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and tied a season-high with 14 points, scored the Golden Bears' first bucket of the second half, but West Chester went on a 15-4 run over the final 6:13 of the third quarter to lead 46-41.
The Maroon and Gold couldn't recover to start the fourth, committing three turnovers and going scoreless for more than three minutes as the Golden Rams (12-12, 8-8) extended their lead to double digits, 53-41.
A
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) free throw with 2:30 remaining pulled KU back within six, 57-51, but Katherine Fisher answered with a 3-point play less than a minute later. West Chester converted all five of its free throws in the fourth.
Lapkiewicz joined Thames in double figures for the visitors, but was held scoreless in the second half. WCU bottled up
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), the PSAC's seventh leading scorer, holding the sophomore without a 3-point field goal for the first time in 45 games.
While Derr could only manage four points on 2-of-8 shooting and had to settle for sharing the program record of 44 consecutive games with a three with Jenna Altomare (2015-17), she didn't let it affect other areas of her game. Derr still contributed seven rebounds and six assists.
Gabrielle Troisi scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half to lead West Chester's comeback effort. Madison Torresin had a game-high 17 points, Destiny Jefferson had 11 and Rylee Power finished with 10 and a game-high nine rebounds for the Golden Rams.
Tarabocchia collected eight points and seven boards, and
Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) also had eight points for KU.
The Golden Bears return to Keystone Arena this coming Wednesday at 6 p.m. to face Salem in their final regular season non-conference game of the season.
