Smith, Zerman Lead a Three-Point Barrage as Kutztown Defeats Salem in Non-League Play

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Sophomores Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) of the Kutztown University women's basketball combined for 49 points and 11 three-pointers as KU earned a new school-record with 16 made three-pointers in taking down Salem University 93-76 in non-conference action Wednesday night at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears (14-10 overall) went 16-of-34 (47.1-percent) from beyond the arc in setting the new program mark for made three's in a game. Smith, who finished with a career-high 26 points, went 6-for-10 from long range. She also had three rebounds and three steals in 20 minutes of action. Zerman tallied a season-high 23 points and was 5-of-6 from deep. She also added two assists.

"I thought we played with a lot of intensity," said Smith. "We knew after losing last Saturday, that we didn't want that feeling again, and wanted to come out and get the win tonight."

Before its setback last Saturday at West Chester, Kutztown had won five straight. It got back to its winning ways with a breakout performance offensively Wednesday, as five players reached double-digits in scoring.

"We moved the ball around and communicated well," Zerman said. "We like to get up and down the court, and when we're in the half court we know that if we pass it around someone will be open and have a good shot."

Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) netted 11 points, and Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) and Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) both had 10 for KU to round out the quintet in double-figures.

Both teams came out of the gate trading blows offensively as the Maroon and Gold held just a slim three-point lead (24-21) after the opening quarter.

The second quarter saw Kutztown really turn it on on its offensive side of the court. KU outscored Salem 32-17 over the 10-minute, second quarter, and made seven of its 16 three-pointers over that span to head into the locker room ahead 56-38 and give itself a comfortable advantage.

The Golden Bears continued to win the battle from behind the three-point line. They connected on four more in the third quarter and held Salem (6-18) to just four total in the entire 40 minutes.

With a 79-56 lead heading into the final quarter, head coach Janet Malouf was able to play her entire healthy roster as everyone logged at least four minutes of action.

Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) recorded five points, two rebounds and two assists, and Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) each added four points to round out the KU scoring. Wright also had nine rebounds and four assists.

Kutztown returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action this Saturday, Feb. 16, at home against Mansfield. The Pink Zone game begins at 1 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
