KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Mercyhurst, which finished the 2018-19 season regionally ranked, got past a shorthanded Kutztown women's tennis team, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at the Keystone Court.
With a pair of starters unavailable, the Golden Bears were forced to shift their lineup against the powerful Lakers. Mercyhurst's second doubles pair of Ulyana Trifonova and Janice Theodora set the tone with a 6-0 win over KU's
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) and
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville). The Lakers' (1-0) top duo of Nada Ostojic and Ivona Plecevic, who reached the semifinals at last weekend's PSAC Individual Championships, bested
Alicia Pursell (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) and
Amanda Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy), 6-1.
Grebosky and Tomczyk captured a pair of games in singles play, but it wasn't enough to keep Mercyhurst from straight set wins in all five contested matches.
The Golden Bears (0-2) are home again on Saturday to face another PSAC West opponent as Slippery Rock visits the Keystone Courts at 3 p.m.
