Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker Saturday in Final Minutes on Senior Day

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team played within two goals of Seton Hill University all game Saturday. Trailing by two with less than five minutes to play, KU drew within one with 3:08 to play, but was unable to gain possession in the final stanza in an 11-10 setback on Senior Day at Keystone Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

In the final minutes, Seton Hill won the final draw control and pushed into KU territory. KU pushed ferociously on the defensive front, but was unable to gain possession to fall by one.

Kutztown was able to move the ball forward successfully throughout the game, converting 17-of-18 clears, but turnovers in the attacking end plagued the Golden Bears down the stretch. After not committing a turnover for nearly a 13-minute stretch, KU hit a slump of six-straight possessions with a turnover – five of them were unforced. KU had less turnovers for the game than Seton Hill, 15-13, it was just a matter of untimely giveaways.

Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) netted a hat-trick on Senior Day with a three-goal game. She was honored pre-game with her fellow seniors, Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and Olivia Haas (Denver, Pa./Cocalico (Edinboro)).

Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) played well and scored two goals, as did Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), who added an assist. Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) had three assists on the day with a goal for a four-point afternoon.

Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic), the programs newest record-holder in career draw controls, added six Saturday with a goal and an assist. Watkins also picked up four draw controls.

Seton Hill had two players record hat-tricks, Jaclyn Frank and Courtney Pontious. Goalkeeper Hailey Jacobs made 13 saves in the victory.

Kutztown closes out its season next weekend, Saturday, April 28, on the road at Mercyhurst University. Game time is 11 a.m.
