EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown University's
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) became the first women's lacrosse player in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history to own a school's career points, goals and assist records on Wednesday. Gabriele broke KU's assist record Wednesday as a late KU surge was not enough against defending PSAC Champion East Stroudsburg University in a 14-10 loss at ESU's Whitenight Field.
Gabriele had two assists Wednesday, giving her 56 for her career to break Kim Irvine's previous record from 1988. Gabriele also holds school records with 167 goals and 223 points, becoming the first player in league history to hold all three.
The Golden Bears (6-7, 3-5 PSAC) finished strong by scoring five of the final six goals, but an early deficit proved too large to overcome against the defending conference champion and 18th-ranked Warriors. Even though Kutztown outscored ESU 7-6 in the second half, highlighted by its late charge of scoring five goals in the final 10:00, KU was unable to get itself back in striking distance.
Turnovers didn't help either side Wednesday, as the teams combined for 58 turnovers on the day.
Gabriele was 1-of-3 Golden Bears to score two goals, as she and
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) each had two goals and two assists.
Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) was KU's third multi-goal scorer.
In the field, Carlucci and
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) had six groundballs apiece, while
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) had four draw controls and
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) had three caused turnovers.
Freshman goalkeeper
Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) made 14 saves in the setback.
Kutztown remains on the road against nationally-ranked competition. KU plays at No. 23 Lock Haven University on Saturday, April 14, beginning at 1 p.m.
