LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team was defeated on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday afternoon, falling by a final of 19-6 to No. 23 Lock Haven University.
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus),
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic),
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) each scored one goal each in the first half for the Golden Bears. In the final 30 minutes of action,
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) and
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) each got on the board to round out the goal scorers for Kutztown.
LHU scored the first two goals to open the scoring, but KU quickly answered with two goals of its own, unassisted tallies by Schmidt and Watkins. The Bald Eagle offense came alive, however, registering seven of the next nine goals to take control in the first half, ahead 9-4 with 2:11 to go.
Holding a 10-4 halftime advantage, Lock Haven continued to assert itself to begin the second half, scoring the first eight goals to pull ahead 18-4.
Smith and Fitzpatrick each scored in the final 10 minutes as LHU tacked on one more to cement the 19-6 final in favor of the Bald Eagles.
Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) took the loss for KU, making a total of six saves dropping her season record to 6-8. LHU's Lauren Girardi earns the win with six saves, allowing five goals, improving her record to 2-1.
With the defeat, the Golden Bears fall to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the PSAC while Lock Haven improves to 9-4 and 4-3 in conference play.
Kutztown will return home to Andre Reed Stadium for its next contest, a Tuesday night tilt on April 17 versus Millersville. The opening draw control will be at 7 p.m.
