BLOOMSBURG, Pa. –
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) won in tiebreakers to clinch the Kutztown University men's tennis team's 5-4 road win at Bloomsburg University Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at BU's Burt Reese Tennis Center.
With the win, the Golden Bears (8-3, 3-2 PSAC) will be the No. 3 seed in the PSAC Tournament. On April 20 at Bloomsburg, KU will face No. 2 Edinboro in the PSAC Semifinals.
Kutztown has now won four-in-a-row, three coming after last week's NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings were released. KU was ranked seventh in the region that will take seven teams to the NCAA Tournament, so KU couldn't have picked a better time to play its best tennis of the year.
Notably, 5-of-9 matches Tuesday went to tiebreakers.
KU overcame dropping 2-of-3 doubles matches to start the day. KU's lone doubles win came at the second flight, where Carl and
Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) won a narrow 8-6 decision. KU's other two teams fought admirably, falling 8-4 at No. 1 and 9-8 (8-6) in tiebreakers at No. 3.
Senior
Nikolay Kodinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/Model High School of Mathematics) tied the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Bloomsburg won the fourth flight, but Kutztown's Perugini won in tiebreakers (6-1, 2-6, 6-4) to tie the match back at 3-3.
Gabriel Nogara Souza (Curitiba, Brazil/Dom Bosco) dropped the first set of his No. 6 singles match, 6-3, but responded with matching 6-0, 6-0 sets to earn the win and give KU a 4-3 lead, giving Carl the first chance for KU to seal the win. Carl won in tiebreakers at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, as Bloomsburg won the final completed match of the night at No. 1 singles (7-6, 4-6, 6-2).
While the new NCAA Regional Rankings will come out Wednesday, Kutztown returns to action on Saturday, April 14, with a road match vs. Virginia State, played at Bloomsburg at 1 p.m.
