HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team went 3-0 this week in Hilton Head, capped with a 7-2 win over Quincy University on Friday morning in the final match of KU's spring break trip.
The three-match winning streak is KU's best since 2014, and extends KU's record to 4-1 this season.
The Golden Bears won 2-of-3 doubles matches and 5-of-6 singles matches Friday.
Nikolay Kodinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/Model High School of Mathematics) and
Gabriel Nogara Souza (Curitiba, Brazil/Dom Bosco) went 2-0 on the day, both winning their doubles and singles matches. The duo won 8-5 in the top flight of doubles, while Kodinov won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Nogara Souza won a one-set, 8-6 decision at the No. 6 flight.
Nogara Souza moves to 3-0 on the year at No. 6 singles.
Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) also won both of his matches Friday. He won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles with
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win in singles play, moving to a team-best 4-1 on the year in singles.
Martin Munoz (Las Palmas, Spain/Claret (Post)) won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5, while
Joan Oliver Perez (Andratx, Spain/IES Baltasar Porcel) rounded out KU's winners in dramatic fashion. After dropping the first set of No. 4 singles, 6-2, Olivier Perez stormed back with a 6-0 second-set win to force tiebreakers. It took 28 points, but Olivier Perez earned the 15-13 win in tiebreakers for the singles victory.
Kutztown returns home and enters conference-play next week, beginning with West Chester University on Wednesday, March 21, at 2 p.m. from Keystone Courts.
