HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Kutztown University set the tone early in Wednesday's spring break match vs. Michigan Tech University. KU won all three doubles matches and four of the ensuing six singles matches in a 7-2 KU men's tennis victory in Hilton Head.
The win is Kutztown's second-in-a-row to start spring break, as the team sports a 3-1 record this season.
The top doubles team of
Nikolay Kodinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/Model High School of Mathematics) and
Gabriel Nogara Souza (Curitiba, Brazil/Dom Bosco) won their second doubles match of the season Wednesday. They took down the top Huskies duo 8-5 to move to 2-2 as a pair.
Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Martin Munoz (Las Palmas, Spain/Claret (Post)) competed at No. 2 doubles for the first time this season and won an impressive 8-1 final. KU's third doubles pairing of
David Nunez Contreras (Madrid, Spain/Mater Immaculata) and
Benjamin Kelly (Medina, Ohio/Highland) competed together for the first time, winning 8-4 at the third flight.
In singles action, the top-two flights both went into tiebreakers in the first set. Munoz competed at No. 1, won the first set 7-6 (8-6), and used the momentum to win the deciding set 6-1.
Michigan Tech won the No. 2 singles match, winning the opening set 7-6 (7-3), and following with a 7-5 win over Kodinov.
Perugini,
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Jason Listmeier (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) closed out the day with three wins in singles action. Perugini moved to a team-best 3-1 on the year with a 6-1, 6-4 win. Carl won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5, and Listmeier improved to 2-0 on the year with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 6 flight.
The Golden Bears close out their spring break trip on Friday, March 16, with a match against Quincy University at 8 a.m.
