HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team started its spring season, and spring break trip down in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with a dramatic 5-4 victory over West Liberty Sunday afternoon.
KU won two of its three doubles matches, with its second and third team duos of
Nolan Perugini (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), and
Martin Munoz (Las Palmas, Spain/Claret (Post)) and
David Nunez Contreras (Madrid, Spain/Mater Immaculata) picking up 8-4 and 8-6 wins respectively. These two victories proved crucial for the Golden Bears as the two teams split the six singles matches.
Nikolay Kodinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/Model High School of Mathematics) had arguably the most exciting match of the day. With the match score tied at 4-4, Kodinov won the first set 6-4, then was the leading the second set 5-4 before it went to a tie breaker. The senior used his experience and picked up the match win 7-6 to put Kutztown ahead 5-4.
Joan Oliver Perez (Andratx, Spain/IES Baltasar Porcel) and
Jason Listmeier (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) each picked up wins. Perez won his match 6-1, 6-1 and Listmeier earned his first collegiate victory at 6-2, 6-1.
Kutztown is back on the courts on Wednesday, Mar. 14 against Michigan Tech at 8 a.m., followed by a match on Friday, Mar. 16 versus Quincy to conclude its spring break trip.
