KUTZTOWN, Pa. – With a few extra days to rest its legs from a three-games-in-five-days stretch, the Kutztown University men's basketball team travels to take on Cheyney University Saturday, Feb. 17, at Cope Hall. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tilt is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
The Golden Bears (18-5 overall, 14-5 PSAC) are coming off a grueling part of their schedule, but are also coming off unscathed, winning all three games in that five-day span. A win against Mansfield (77-71) last Saturday was followed by victories over No. 19 Shippensburg (92-85) in double overtime Monday, and then a win vs. Millersville (95-81) Wednesday.
Against the Marauders, KU turned a halftime deficit into a double-digit victory by outscoring Millersville 51-36 in the second half, after trailing 45-44 at the break. Kutztown tied the game at 58-58. From there, Kutztown began to separate itself using a 17-7 run over a span of 6:22 to go up 75-63 with 7:17 remaining. Millersville would not get any closer than seven points (75-68) when the Maroon and Gold quickly scored the next six points to keep their double-digit cushion for the remainder of the way.
The Maroon and Gold knew before that game that they had clinched a top-four seed in the PSAC Tournament, and will host at least one playoff game.
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) both tallied double-doubles for the second consecutive game. Ridgeway finished with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, and dished out 10 assists to go along with five rebounds. Williams had 13 points, going 6-for-8 from the floor, and grabbed 14 rebounds along with tying a season-high with three blocks. It was his fourth double-double this season, the most by a KU freshman since the 2012-13 season.
It is the third time this season that a Golden Bear duo both recorded double-doubles in the same game.
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) netted 20 points, giving KU two players that scored at least 20 points in the same game for the seventh time this season. Lee went 12-for-13 from the free-throw line, tying a career-high for free-throws made and percentage in a game. Lee stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. He now has at least one steal in 19 of the 23 games played this season. Lee (1,368) and Ridgeway (1,226) are ninth and 15th in program history in career points.
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)) also reached double-figures vs. Millersville, scoring 16 points, connecting on 4-of-9 three-pointers, and also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Kutztown has won the last nine meetings against Cheyney (2-21, 2-17), dating back to Feb. 20, 2013. The Wolves have lost their last 12 games, coming off an 81-65 loss to Shippensburg last Wednesday.
Cheyney is scoring a league-low 57.6 points per game compared to Kutztown who is second at 87.8 ppg.
The Wolves may not score a ton of points, but they hit the glass. Cheyney ranks fifth in the PSAC in rebounds per game (38.4), just behind Kutztown, who sits in fourth (38.5). Jeff Lewis leads Cheyney in points (10.9 ppg), rebounds (5.1 rpg) and blocks (0.7 bpg).
