KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Bernie Driscoll, the winningest coach in Kutztown University men's basketball history, has announced his retirement effective August 22, following 25 years and 24 seasons at the helm of the Golden Bears.
Â
Driscoll guided the Maroon and Gold to new heights during his tenure, winning six Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division titles, advancing to four PSAC championship games and making four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. KU had only qualified for the national tournament once in program history before Driscoll's appointment.
"I'm proud of the relationships developed with players, staff and professors during my time at Kutztown," Driscoll said. "The successes we celebrated on and off the court will be lifelong memories. KU is a great school with great people. I will miss it and love it dearly, but it was just time."
Â
Driscoll won better than 360 games –over 200 victories clear of second place on KU's all-time wins list—while producing leaders on and off the court. His best season came in 2008-09 when the Golden Bears won a program record 28 games (28-5), won the PSAC East outright, reached the PSAC championship game and the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional final.
Â
Kutztown returned to the regional final in 2016, capping a 23-7 season, before embarking on a tremendous 2016-17 campaign that saw the Golden Bears go 26-4 with a program record 20 conference wins (20-2) and second straight PSAC East title.
Â
Driscoll won four PSAC East Coach of the Year awards and led KU to the PSAC East crown in 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2015-16 and 2016-17. He ranks fourth all-time among PSAC East coaches in career victories.
Â
Driscoll mentored six PSAC East Players of the Year: Bilal Salaam (2004-05), Bruce Hall (2005-06), David Ben (2008-09), Stephen Dennis (2009-10), Josh Johnson (2015-16) and Anthony Lee (2018-19).
Â
Dennis went on to be named 2010 Daktronics Ron Lenz Division II National Player of the Year. Kutztown's all-time leading scorer, Dennis, ranks third in PSAC history with 2,406 points. The program's two other 2,000-point scorers, Lee (2,292) and Ben (2,017), rank fourth and 13th in PSAC scoring, respectively.
Â
Driscoll graduated from Dickinson College in 1977 with a degree in biology. Prior to arriving at Kutztown, Driscoll was an assistant at West Chester University for 13 seasons.
Â
"We would like to thank Coach Driscoll for all of the contributions he has made to both the men's basketball program and campus over the past 25 years," director of athletics
Renee Hellert said. "His leadership shaped great student-athletes and people. We are grateful for his dedication to Kutztown University and college basketball and wish him the best in retirement."
Â
Associate head coach
Tom York will take over as interim head coach for the 2025-26 season. York, a member of Driscoll's staff for more than two decades, earned All-PSAC East honors with the KU men's basketball team in 1981-82. He served as head coach of the Golden Bear women's basketball program from 1987-94, winning 96 games.
Kutztown will conduct a national coaching search next February.
