No. 8 Women's Soccer Breaks Through in 77th Minute For 1-0 Win at Shippensburg; Bracken Makes History

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – A mere hours after receiving a top-10 national-rank, the No. 8 Kutztown University women's soccer team netted a 77th-minute goal from junior forward Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) to push KU to a 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win Tuesday afternoon at Shippensburg University.

It is the 17th consecutive season the Golden Bears (10-2 overall, 8-2 PSAC) have won at least 10 games.

In the victory, junior goalie Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) moved into first on the KU all-time list for career wins (29) and career shutouts (19). She finished with two saves.

The Golden Bears seemed destined for a goal from the opening kick, but were held goalless for more than three-quarters of the game.

KU outshot Shippensburg (6-6, 5-6) 27-5 overall and 12-3 on goal. Kutztown created its chances using a traditional 4-4-2 formation to control the midfield. In controlling possession of the midfield, it led to scoring opportunities a plenty.

Zwiercan and freshmen Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) were the beneficiaries of good passing and movement up the field. Zwiercan and Kane finished with four shots on goal each and Argen added three, with six shots total.

Senior defender Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) may have made the play of the day defensively for the Maroon and Gold, saving a headed shot by the Raiders off a corner kick that was destined to find the back of the net. But Monte Carlo stayed on the post and cleared her line to keep the game scoreless.

After a 0-0 halftime, it was more of the same as KU held the advantage in possession and chances, but still with little to account for on the scoreboard.

Then Zwiercan, on the far side of the field from her bench, took a few dribbles and hit a shot with her left that took a deflection and hit net as Kutztown was finally able to celebrate a goal. It was the ninth goal this season for Zwiercan, third in the PSAC.

The Kutztown defense now has three shutouts in a row and nine on the season. It has given up just three goals all year.

Kutztown returns home to take on Mansfield University on Friday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. at Keystone Field.
