CLARION, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's tennis team was taken to the final match and narrowly defeated Clarion University in its regular season opener in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match Friday evening.
The Golden Bears won two-of-three doubles matches to earn a point, and then split the six singles matches, good enough to earn the 4-3 match win.
Both the No. 1 doubles team of
Yasmeen Malik (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Alicia Pursell (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) and the No. 3 doubles duo of
Jillian Siefert (Lenhartsville, Pa./Kutztown Area) and
Ashley Carter (Eynon, Pa./Valley View) were victorious 6-4.
Pursell went unbeaten on the day winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) and
Sarah Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount De Sales Academy) also recorded singles wins at No. 2 and No. 4 respectively. Maher won 6-2, 6-3 and Grebosky was taken to the brink, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Kutztown remains on the road and has a quick turnaround before its next match. KU takes on Slippery Rock in another PSAC match tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m.
