The Golden Bears (14-3-1 overall, 12-3-1) and Warriors (12-5-1, 11-4-1) have met in the big dance three straight seasons and four of the last five, including twice in the PSAC final in both 2014 and 2016. This will be the sixth postseason meeting overall between the two schools. KU has qualified for the PSAC Tournament in each of the last 11 seasons.
Kutztown enters the game as the two seed and East Stroudsburg the seven seed. The two teams squared off nearly two weeks ago on Keystone Field, with KU coming out on the winning end 2-1 on Oct. 17. Freshman
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and junior
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) combined for the two goals and seniors
Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) and
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) and junior
Schyler Ackerman (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) all contributed an assist for the Maroon and Gold. Junior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) stopped seven Warriors' shots.
Each of the past 10 meetings between the teams have been decided by a single goal. The two clashed in the PSAC semifinals last year, with ESU winning 1-0.
KU won its season finale, 4-2 last Saturday against University of Pitt-Johnstown. It enters the playoffs unbeaten in its last two games.
Junior forward
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) leads KU with 11 goals, fourth in the PSAC. Her three assists give her 25 points, which ranks fifth. Freshman
Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) has tallied four goals and a team-high five assists. Monte Carlo also has five assists.
Ryan, Kane, Mohr and Miller all have three goals.
Tori Angelus (Little Egg Harbor Twp, N.J./Pinelands Regional (Duquesne)),
Savanna Harrison (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and
Rachel Rizzo (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) all have one goal on the year. Ackerman (two) and
Kayla Reed (Riegelsville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) (one) are also in the assist stat column.
The KU defense is having one of its best seasons in program history. It has recorded 12 shutouts this season and has allowed just seven goals during the regular season, which is the least in program history over the course of a season. Both defensive accomplishments rank second in the PSAC behind Bloomsburg (14 shutouts, five goals allowed).
Junior captain
Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Monte Carlo,
Kaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic),
Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and
Molly McHarg (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) have all played in double-digit games in the back end of the defense in front of Bracken. Bracken leads the PSAC with a .935 save percentage and is second with a .317 goals against average. She ranks first in program history in career wins (32) and shutouts (21).
Kutztown is also ranked second after the latest NCAA Atlantic Regional Poll, released last Wednesday.
The winner will face the winner of the third seed Millersville and sixth seed Seton Hill at the site of the highest remaining seed on Friday, Nov. 2.
