Soccer eliminated by Fairmont State in NCAA opening round

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The third-seeded Kutztown University women's soccer team opened the game with a goal off a corner kick in the first ten minutes, but the sixth-seeded Fairmont State Fighting Falcons responded with two scores of their own to claim a 2-1 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division II Championships at West Chester's Rockwell Field on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (13-6-1) had a tight matchup on paper heading into the morning contest, and it showed on the field, as both teams had strong offensive tries and aggressive defensive plays throughout the 90-minute battle. It was the Fighting Falcons (17-1-3) who came out on top in the end, as the team rides into the second round carrying an undefeated streak nearing two months that includes their Mountain East Conference Championship victory and a strong regular season slate.

Kutztown stole the early lead when junior Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) sent a corner into the back of the awaiting pack of players in front of the goal, where senior defender Skyler Jordan (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) positioned herself and landed a header on the left side. It was the third goal of the season for Jordan, a career-best mark, and the team-leading tenth assist for Day, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's East Division Defensive Athlete of the Year.

Fairmont State responded with a 23rd-minute goal, and after a heavy amount of pressure on both ends, broke free for another goal early in the second half to get a one-goal lead they would not relinquish. Both goals came off the boot of graduate student Filippa Stalhammar, who entered the game with four goals on the year for a Fighting Falcons squad that succeeds at spreading out its attack.

Kutztown followed with several strong charges led by forwards Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) and Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) in the final 20 minutes, with none drawing the game even in the end. Morgan finished with a team-high three shots, while McDonald had two on-target shots to lead the team.

Junior goalkeeper Morgan O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) faced heavy pressure from all angles, making seven saves on a game-high 15 shots.

Fairmont State held a 15-13 shot advantage and a 9-8 edge in on-target attempts. Each goalkeeper had seven saves, while Kutztown held an 8-2 advantage in corner attempts.

Kutztown concludes the season with 13 wins for the third time in the past five years, while reaching the PSAC Championship Game for the second consecutive season and eighth time in program history.

The Golden Bears look forward to returning this year's PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year in Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington), goalkeeper Morgan O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and forward Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) – all seniors next year – as well as regular contributors Sierra Hess (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Kaitlyn Hankins (Neptune, N.J./Neptune), and Ava Schmidhauser (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) for the 2026 season.
