KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team has had a recent run of victories over Cheyney University, winning eight straight games dating back to its last loss against the Wolves on Feb. 20, 2013. The two teams meet again at Keystone Arena Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup.
The Golden Bears (12-2 overall, 8-2 PSAC) are riding a four-game winning streak overall, and are coming off an 87-77 win at Millersville University last Saturday, Jan. 13. Their previous three victories were by five points or less, including two games decided by two points with less than 0:01 remaining.
Redshirt-junior
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) and senior
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) each recorded double-doubles in the win over the Marauders. Lee scored a team-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Ridgeway tallied 22 points and dished out 10 assists.
Lee is second in the conference in scoring (23.0 ppg), while shooting 55.7 percent from three, ranking first in NCAA Division II. He is also second in the PSAC in free-throw percentage (93.5) and fourth in steals per game (2.1). Ridgeway leads Div II in assists per game (8.3) and is fourth in career assists among active players with 581.
Senior
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)) has started the last two games and has averaged 17 ppg in those contests. He is third on KU in assists (25). Redshirt-junior
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) leads the team with 13 blocks, ranking 10th in the PSAC in blocks per game (1.0). He is also third on the team with 16 steals.
Sophomore
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was one rebound shy of a double-double at Millersville, recording 11 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes of action, the second most this season. Junior
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) made his only shot attempt, a 3-pointer, against the Marauders, and is averaging a career-high 16.1 minutes per game.
Cheyney (2-12, 2-8) enters on the heels of an 84-50 defeat to Shippensburg University last Saturday. The Wolves are on a three-game losing streak, but have won as many games this season thus far, that they did last season, ending with a 2-25 overall record.
Compared to the Golden Bears' 87.8 ppg (second in PSAC), the Wolves are averaging a league-low 56.9 ppg. Cheyney's leading scorer is Cliff St. Juste (12.8 ppg), with the next closest being Jeff Lewis (8.9). The Wolves give up 86.1 ppg, right around KU's average, so expect a high-scoring game for the Maroon and Gold with KU scoring at least 98 points in three of the last four contests between the two.
Kutztown is also unbeaten at home this season, 8-0 at Keystone Area, winning 35 of its last 37 home games. It has also won its last 15 games in January dating back to 1/20/2016.
KU is ranked sixth in the latest Division Two Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) Atlantic Regional Poll.
