BLOOMSBURG, Pa. –
Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) tied the game in the 62nd minute to give the fifth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team life, but eighth-ranked Bloomsburg University had upset on its mind. The Huskies scored with less than two minutes to go to hand the Golden Bears a heartbreaking 2-1 loss Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Golden Bears (6-3, 1-1 PSAC) and Huskies (5-3, 1-0) played a scoreless first half, where both teams had multiple opportunities in front of goal.
Morgan Aldinger (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) showed up with a defensive save in the first half to keep the clean sheet intact.
Bloomsburg struck first in the 37th minute – less than 2:00 after halftime - as MacKenna Mahan scored in front of a crowded net for the 1-0 lead. KU defender
Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) picked up KU's second defensive save of the game in the 54th minute, possibly giving KU the spark it needed.
Fresh off a stretch of back-to-back penalty corners,
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) found Stewart in front of goal for a one-time deflection to tie the game at 1-1 with less than 9:00 to play.
Bloomsburg earned two corners in the final 5:00 and capped off its afternoon with the game-winning goal in the 69th minute off a deflection by Brooke Zeiders.
The Golden Bear remain on the road and look to return to the win column this weekend, Saturday, Sept. 30, at Slippery Rock University. Game-time is set for 12 p.m.
