SALISBURY, Md. – Freshman Derek Barney (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) led the way for the Kutztown University men's cross country team in his first collegiate meet. Barney finished eighth out of 57 runners with a time of 25:55.47 Saturday afternoon at the Salisbury Fall Classic Invitational 8k course race.
 
Barney was the only Kutztown runner to finish in the top-10.
 
Five other Golden Bears placed in the top-18 led by junior Xavier Gutierrez (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) with a time of 26:17.82. Nick DeGennaro (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), Andrew Sulon (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area), Jared Luckanitz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and AJ Kilpatrick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) rounded out the top group of runners for the Golden Bears.
 
DeGennaro, Luckanitz and Kilpatrick all beat personal records. DeGennaro had a time of 26:21.60, Luckanitz came in at 26:29.96, and Kilpatrick finished at 26:45.26.
 
Sophomore Jason Leonardo (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional), who finished 25th, ended his day with a personal record time of 27:18.70.
 
Chris Coates (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), Derek Domsicz (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Nate Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) all finished in the top-38.
 
Navy won the Invitational with four runners placing in the top-10. Host Salisbury was a close second, followed by KU, Shenandoah and Delaware Tech CC in fifth.
 
Kutztown returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. as it competes in its annual Division II/III Challenge at Kutztown University.
