KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's tennis team opened the 2017 season on a high note, sweeping its match against Holy Family 9-0 Friday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.
It was the first straight-set win for the Golden Bears (1-0 overall) since they beat Cheyney 7-0 to open up the 2014-15 season.
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Alicia Pursell (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area), both of whom won their singles matches by scores of 6-1, 6-0, opened up the match together on the court, running to an 8-0 win in doubles.
Mackenzie Delp (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and
Shadimon Navarro (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), and
Yasmeen Malik (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Ashley Carter (Eynon, Pa./Valley View) also gave KU a team-lead of 3-0 after both teams won their doubles matches by 8-0 scores.
Outside of Capoferri and Pursell's singles victories, Kutztown made quick work of the Tigers in the other four singles matches.
Malik, Navarro, Delp and
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) all won by scores of 6-0, 6-0 to cap a perfect start to the regular season for the Maroon and Gold.
Kutztown will begin to prepare for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Individual Championships next weekend, Sept. 30-Oct.2, at Bloomsburg University.
