No. 22 Wrestling Looks Sharp to Open 2017 with Road Win at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The 22nd-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team returned to competition for the first time in 2017 Tuesday night. KU hit the road to nearby Millersville University and rattled off wins in all 10 weight classes in its 37-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual meet victory.
 
The Golden Bears (3-1, 2-1 PSAC) had bonus-point wins in 4-of-10 bouts – two of which were by their nationally-ranked wrestlers.
 
No. 12 Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) got off to a quick start with three takedowns in the first period at 125. He went on to a 17-5 major decision for his team-leading eighth win of the season.
 
At 141, Ryne Morrison (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston (Ursinus)) pinned his opponent in 1:41 for his team-leading third pinfall of the season.
 
In his first match as a Golden Bears, No. 5 T.C. Warner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Bloomsburg)) met expectations with a 15-2 major decision at 165. The following match at 174, Joe Balboni (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton (Old Dominion)) scored a match-high 22 points – all in the first period - in his 22-3 tech. fall in just 2:31.
 
Winning by decision in the lower classes were Christopher Crane (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) at 133 (6-4), Chad Haegele (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) at 149 behind a match-winning takedown with 37 seconds left (3-2), and James Meyer (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) at 157 (9-5).
 
At the upper classes, Collin Schildt (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) won an 11-6 decision at 184, Jeff Reimel (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) succeeded in his first match of the season at 197 (5-2), and 10th-ranked Ryan Appleby (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) secured the team shutout with a 5-2 decision at heavyweight.
 
The Golden Bears hit the road and head to Hampton, Va. For the Virginia Duals on Jan. 13-14.
