KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team is looking forward to beginning a five-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 30, as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play swings into full gear. The Golden Bears have played just two of their first 13 matches to open the season in the friendly confines of Keystone Arena.
KU (3-10, 0-2 PSAC) hosts Seton Hill (10-4, 2-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. before welcoming California (Pa.) (9-3, 2-0) to town for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 1. Friday night's match will be the first of two matches telecast by KUTV this fall.
Fans can watch the game on Service Electric Cablevision Channel 24 and 524 (HD), Hometown Utilicom Channel 191 in Kutztown and eastern Berks Country, and Service Electric Channel 266 in the Lehigh Valley. All games are also available through KUTV's webcast.
Kutztown is coming off a weekend in which it opened its PSAC season with losses at Indiana (Pa.) (11-2, 2-0) and Clarion (7-6, 2-0). Led by
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven))'s double-double of 16 kills and 11 digs and
Sophie Kerschner (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon)'s career-high 17 digs, the Golden Bears took a set from IUP on Friday night and were primed to force a fifth set before a late Crimson Hawk rally. The next day against the Golden Eagles,
Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) recorded a team-best nine kills as KU went toe-to-toe with the Southwest Division favorites in the third set before ultimately being swept.
Moyer currently ranks in the top three of the PSAC in kills per set (3.57) and service aces per set (0.52). She also leads the team with a .227 hitting percentage and is second with 2.89 digs per set. The sophomore transfer has begun the season recording double-digit kills and a double-double in 11 of the first 13 matches.
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) joins Moyer in the top 10 of the league, ranking eighth in assists per set with an average of 8.07. Currently third in program history in career assists, the senior also just moved into 11th in career digs and is 22 shy of becoming the 10th Golden Bear to amass 1,000 for her career.
Also primed to join the record book this weekend is
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley), who currently leads Kutztown with an average of 3.57 digs per set. The senior is just seven digs shy of becoming the third Golden Bear in program history to reach 1,500 for her career.
Other KU leaders in 2016 include
Taylor Brown (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) and
Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area). Brown paces the Golden Bears with a .237 hitting percentage, while Carpenter is atop the team at 0.90 blocks per set after working her way back onto the floor after an injury.
Friday's opponent, Seton Hill, enters the weekend on the heels of opening PSAC play with victories over Southeast Division members West Chester (25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20) and Cheyney (25-9, 25-17, 25-15). The Griffins rank in the top half of the conference in nearly every statistical category, including blocks per set (5th), assists per set (5th), hitting percentage (6th), digs per set (6th) and kills per set (7th).
Leah Bisignani (7th) and Jenna Sassack (10th) give Seton Hill two players in the top 10 of the PSAC in blocks per set with respective averages of 0.89 and 0.87. Cassie Hausfeld leads the offensive attack at 3.40 kills per set, which ranks fifth in the league. Hannah Moeller ranks sixth in digs per set, averaging 4.91.
California (Pa.) also defeated West Chester (25-10, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18) and Cheyney (25-7, 25-9, 25-12) last weekend. The Vulcans possess one of the top offensive attacks in the PSAC as they pace the conference at 2.12 service aces per set, are third with 12.86 kills per set on .229 hitting, and fourth at 11.64 assists per set.
It will be a matchup of No. 1 vs. No. 2 as the only individual Moyer trails in the league in kills per set is Danielle Hayes, whose average of 4.30 is also 15th in the NCAA. Hayes is also one spot ahead of Moyer in services aces per set, sitting in second at 0.58.
Megan Litoborski sets up Hayes and is third in the PSAC at 10.05 assists per set. Seairra Barret is also an offensive threat as she hits an efficient .309, which is good for eighth in the conference.
After this weekend's action, Kutztown will turn its attention to two more PSAC opponents next weekend. The Golden Bears welcome Shippensburg to Keystone Arena on Friday, Oct. 7 for a 7 p.m. start before hosting Millersville the next day, Saturday Oct. 8, at 3 p.m.
