HAMPTON, Va. – The Kutztown University wrestling team won two matches on Saturday to win the 2016 American College Championship at the Virginia Duals, hosted at the Hampton Coliseum.
The Golden Bears (5-3) opened the day with a 28-15 win over Liberty in the semifinals, and closed the tournament with a 3-0 record after a 32-3 victory over Minnesota State Moorhead.
Multiple wrestlers won both of their matches on Saturday. 125-pounder
Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) won two decisions and 141-pounder
Travis Roper (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) won by decision and major decision to highlight the low weights. Roper returned to the mat for the first time since Nov. 19, went 3-0 over the weekend and moves to 8-0 on the year.
Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South (Lock Haven)), the second-ranked 157-pounder in Division II, opened the day with a pin in 2:15 over Liberty, and closed the day with a narrow 8-6 sudden-victory decision.
James Meyer (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) won both his matches at 165,
Joe Balboni (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton (Old Dominion)) split his matches at 174 that included a 23-point major decision against MSU Moorhead.
At 184, team captain
Collin Schildt (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) went 2-0. Fellow captain
Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) earned 10 team points with a pin and major decision on Saturday, as
Ryan Appleby (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) rounded out the Golden Bears with a 1-0 day at 285, a 10-2 major over Moorhead.
Kutztown returns home for its next two dual meets, beginning on Saturday, Jan. 16 against Gannon University. Action begins at 12 p.m. from Keystone Arena.
