10-Run Nightcap Highlights Saturday Split at Lock Haven

KU-LHU Series Stats

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team splits its pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division games on Saturday. It dropped game one to Lock Haven University 2-0, but rallied with a 10-7 win in game two for a split at Lock Haven's Foundation Field.

Matt Swarmer pitched game one for Kutztown and notched eight strikeouts in six innings of work. A junior, Swarmer threw 78 strikeouts this season, a career-high and the most by a KU Pitcher since Darin Gorski hit triple-digits in 2009 (100). Swarmer held a 78/13 strikeout/walk ratio with a 3.83 ERA this year with a 5-4 record and a team-high four complete games.

The Golden Bears (18-22, 9-19 PSAC East) had three hits in the opener, but ended with 13 in the nightcap. Matthew Armour opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first for a 2-0 lead. Ricky Gorrell had a sac bunt and Brandon Martinez connected on a two-run double down the left field line for a 5-1 Kutztown advantage.

Lock Haven (13-24, 11-17) continued to answer with runs in smaller dosages, as two runs in the bottom half of the second kept KU in front, 5-3.

The lead jumped to 9-3 with four unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings. Gorrell drove in two more runs with a single up the middle, and the mid-game production was capped with a RBI by freshman Ryan Cox.

The Bald Eagles closed the gap to 9-6 in the fourth, and the teams traded runs in the sixth including a RBI double by Travis Kreitz.

With the late comeback, KU reliever Bobby Reddick picked up the win and Matt Matricardi earned the one-out save.

The Golden Bears wrap up their season on Monday, April 27 with their annual game against Albright College at FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Reading Fightin' Phils. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
