Box Score BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – In the final match of the regular season, the Kutztown University men's tennis team and Edinboro University entered the contest with perfect 4-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) records. The Fighting Scots came out on top, 7-2, to clinch the regular-season conference title on Sunday from Bloomsburg University's Burt Reese Tennis Center.
Kutztown (14-4, 4-1 PSAC) found itself in a hole heading into singles play after dropping all three of the doubles matches to Edinboro (13-6, 5-0).
Varun Desai and
Ken Beebe won six games in their 8-6 setback at No. 2 doubles, while
Rich Lichtenwalner and
Matt Maguire claimed five games at the top flight.
For the second day in a row, Maguire and
Indi Reverte came through for the Golden Bears in singles competition. Maguire took down Matias Aignasse at No. 2 singles in straight sets, but not without a battle. The senior triumphed in a first-set tiebreaker, before taking the second set, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, Reverte was also victorious in straight sets, downing Anmol Sandhu 6-3, 6-3.
Lichtenwalner came out strong with a 6-0 shutout in the first set at the fourth flight, but dropped the next two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Desai and
Gabriel Nogara Souza each collected five games in their setbacks at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
As the No. 2 seed, Kutztown will return to action in the PSAC Semifinals against No. 3 Mercyhurst University on Friday, April 24 in Bloomsburg. Edinboro and West Chester University will battle in the other semifinal matchup. Match times for the PSAC Tournament have not yet been announced.
