Box Score MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Typically a conference matchup, the Kutztown University men's tennis team traveled to Millersville University's McComsey Tennis Courts on Friday, defeating the Marauders 7-2 in non-conference action.
Kutztown (13-3)'s four upperclassmen showed their strength in doubles play once again, giving KU a 2-1 advantage.
Matt Maguire and
Rich Lichtenwalner topped Jody Sambrick Jr. and Kevin Tran at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, while the senior duo of
Varun Desai and
Ken Beebe won their eighth consecutive doubles match together with an 8-1 triumph at the second flight.
Niko Mucci and Pearson Clary picked up an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles for Millersville (1-13).
The Golden Bears swept the top five singles flights in straight sets to secure the team's victory.
Maguire and freshman
Filip Lagerqvist executed impressive 6-0, 6-0 performances at the No. 2 and No. 5 singles positions, respectively. Lichtenwalner held off Clary late for a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, while
Gabriel Nogara Souza surrendered only three games at the fourth flight (6-1, 6-2).
Desai and Sambrick Jr. battled back-and-forth in the top singles match, with Desai prevailing 7-6, 6-4.
With 117 combined victories, Desai is one win away from breaking into the top 10 in program history.Millersville's Christian Boyer took KU's
David Nunez Contreras to a third-set super breaker at sixth singles, winning 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.
The Golden Bears still have two, crucial conference matches left this weekend, starting with Mercyhurst University tomorrow, Saturday, April 18. The match will be hosted by Bloomsburg University at 3 p.m.
