Box Score | NCAA Regional Rankings KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team celebrated Senior Day on Wednesday for three Golden Bears as it defeated Bloomsburg University 9-0, clinching itself a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships next weekend.
The Golden Bears (12-3, 3-0 PSAC) will compete in the PSAC Championships in search of its fifth title in seven years. It has clinched one of four spots in the tournament, and will have its final seeding determined this weekend, when it goes against the other two teams atop the conference in Mercyhurst and Edinboro.
Kutztown also learned it is ranked seventh in the official NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings on Wednesday afternoon. Seven teams qualify for the Atlantic Region Tournament, including conference champions, so Kutztown will need to keep up its high level of play to avoid getting bumped out.
The NCAA selections will be announced on Tuesday, April 28 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time on
www.ncaa.com.
Senior duo
Varun Desai and
Ken Beebe stretched their winning streak to seven in doubles action. They won at the second flight, 8-3, to move to 14-1 this year. Desai also won at the top flight of singles play and holds a 16-4 singles record this season with 115 combined victories, 11th in program history and three shy of 10th.
Fellow senior
Matt Maguire also had a strong senior day. He swept his opponent at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3, and teamed with
Rich Lichtenwalner at the top flight of doubles for an 8-4 win.
Joan Oliver Perez, Lichtenwalner,
Gabriel Nogara Souza and
Indi Reverte all won their singles matches.
Kutztown competes at Millersville University on Friday, April 17 for a non-conference match at 2 p.m., and will use it as a tune-up for this weekend's PSAC matches against Mercyhurst and Edinboro on April 18-19 at Bloomsburg University.
