Rich Lichtenwalner pulled out a tiebreaker victory in singles action that clinched a team victory for the Kutztown University men's tennis team in a 7-2 road win over Philadelphia University on Monday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (11-3) were outshined in doubles action as the Rams (10-10) won two of three to open the day. Senior duo
Varun Desai and
Ken Beebe won Kutztown's lone doubles match 8-5 at the second flight to move to 13-1 on the year.
KU responded well and swept the singles matches, with Lichtenwalner's 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory at No. 3 singles sealing the team victory. Desai won at the top flight of singles 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to mark his sixth straight singles win, his 12th in a row including doubles matches with Beebe, and his 113th career victory for 11th all-time in KU history.
Matt Maguire won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-5,
Joan Oliver Perez won in straight sets at 6-4, 6-2 for his fifth straight win,
Gabriel Nogara Souza turned in a win after dropping the first set, and
Indi Reverte closed out the singles victories for KU at 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Kutztown looks ahead to its home-finale on Wednesday, April 15 against Bloomsburg University beginning at 2 p.m. at Keystone Courts.
