Men's Boxscore | Women's Boxscore BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's and women's tennis teams competed in non-conference action at the Bloomsburg Duals on Sunday. The Golden Bear men defeated Shepherd University 5-0, while the KU women fell to the host Bloomsburg University, 9-0.
In men's action in a first-to-five format, the Golden Bears (10-3) could not have started off any better. They swept doubles action to put all the pressure on Shepherd in singles play.
Varun Desai was one of two Golden Bears to finish their singles match. After winning in doubles with
Ken Beebe by an 8-1 final, he won at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0. It was Desai's 111th career combined victory as he moved to 14-4 in singles and 15-2 in doubles this season, 12-1 with fellow senior Beebe.
Indi Reverte was also a double winner. He won at the third flight of doubles with
Joan Oliver Perez, 8-1, and rattled off a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
The duo of
Matt Maguire and
Rich Lichtenwalner won the final match for KU at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Maguire, a senior, notched his 84th career combined victory.
In women's action against Bloomsburg University in a non-conference match,
Jessica Caples had Kutztown's top performance of the day. At No. 3 singles, she was on the brink of elimination after dropping the first set 6-2. She rallied with a 6-0 shutout in the second set to force a tiebreaker, but ultimately fell by a narrow 10-8 final in the setback.
Caitlin Davies won four games at the fourth flight of singles, and newcomer
Emily Wesoloski won two games at the second flight.
The Kutztown men will play at Philadelphia University on Monday, April 13 at 3 p.m., while the women will have three more days to prepare for a rematch with Bloomsburg in a conference match on Wednesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at Kutztown's Keystone Courts.
