Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team opened by winning two of three doubles matches, and followed with wins in four of six singles matches in its 6-3 non-conference road win at Caldwell University on a windy Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (9-3) have won 66.7 percent of their doubles matches this year with a 34-17 record. The duo of
Varun Desai and
Ken Beebe has been phenomenal in their first year together to boast an 11-1 record in doubles action. Playing at the second flight on Saturday, they won 8-4.
Gabriel Nogara Souza and
Indi Reverte also won in doubles play with an 8-2 win at No. 3, their second win of the season in as many pairings.
Moving into singles action, Desai won his 109th combined match with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep at the top flight. He improves his singles record to 13-4 this season.
Kutztown dropped the second flight in a tiebreaker, but had straight-set wins in the next three matches.
Rich Lichtenwalner won his first set 6-1 before his opponent had to retire due to injury in the second set.
Joan Oliver Perez won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and Nogara Souza pulled out a 7-5 win in the first set before following up with a 6-0 shutout in the second.
The Golden Bears remain in non-conference action tomorrow, Sunday, April 12, when they take on Shepherd University at the Bloomsburg Duals at 12 p.m.
