Live Results

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The 12th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team competed in the national spotlight at the Cliff Kean / National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals on Friday. Despite a pair of losses, Kutztown turned in some solid performances to solidify its place amongst the nation's best.

The Golden Bears (4-5) fell to 10th-ranked Lindenwood University, 21-15, and dropped a 33-12 decision to Lake Erie College in the consolation bracket.

The KU-LU match opened with three bonus victories, but the final seven matches were all won by decision as both teams had chances for victory in nearly every match.

Freshman Nicholas DeMarco (Lyndhurst, N.J./David Brearley Middle) opened the match against fifth-ranked Marcos Rios-Tamayo. Rios-Tamayo took a 2-0 lead in the first period and held DeMarco down for 2:18 to take the early lead. DeMarco didn't give up though and battled back to ride on top the entire second period to trim riding time down to 18 seconds. The nationally-ranked grappler opened with three early points though and scored seven points in the final period to defeat DeMarco by major decision, 9-1.

Travis Roper (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) answered with a convincing victory at 133 pounds. He opened to a 5-2 lead through the first period, and scored five unanswered points in the second to hold a 10-2 lead. Both wrestlers tallied a reversal in the final period, but as the final buzzer sounded, Roper turned Hunter Haralson for the 7:00 pin.

Second-ranked Kyle Webb defeated Kutztown's Matt Benvenuto (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) at 141 pounds, 9-1, to give Lindenwood an 8-6 lead.

Joe Esposito (Washington Township, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep) trailed the third-ranked 149-pounder, Terrel Wilbourn, 3-0 after the second period. He opened the third with an escape to trim his deficit to two, but Wilbourn countered with two takedowns to earn a 7-3 win, giving Lindenwood the 11-6 lead.

Kutztown's Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South (Lock Haven)) trailed Derrick Weller 3-2 entering the final period. He tied the match at 3-3 with an escape and followed with a takedown in the first minute for a 5-3 lead. Weller reversed the takedown in the final seconds to tie the match and go to sudden victory. Weller nabbed the first takedown in extra time for the 7-5 sudden victory in overtime.

Eight-ranked Bo Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown) led 1-0 through two periods and used his third-period takedown to earn a 3-0 win and bring KU within five points at 14-9. Ryan Krecker (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area (Campbell)) earned a 7-4 win at 174 as KU trailed 14-12 with three matches to go.

Andre Petroski (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Bloomsburg)) led 6-4 entering the final period, but Lindenwood's John McArdle scored four of the final five points to earn an 8-7 decision and give Lindenwood a 17-12 lead, forcing KU to win the final two matches to win the dual meet.

KU dropped the 197 pound match to drop the dual meet, but ended with its undefeated heavyweight. Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)) controlled his 4-2 win by decision and only allowed points via escape as KU dropped the match, 21-15.

Lake Erie won the first four matches and won seven of 10 in the nightcap for KU. Trailing 18-0, Martoccio put KU on the board with a 10-4 decision. Lake Erie responded with two more wins to ensure itself the dual meet win.

Kutztown won two of the final three weight classes to wrap-up its time at the National Duals. Petroski earned a 4-0 decision at 184, and Haddad won his 15th match of the year with a pin in 1:23.

The Golden Bears return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. against Seton Hill University at Keystone Arena. KU will be holding a celebratory gathering before the match in honor of assistant coach Dan Hinkel's 50th year with the program.
